What is Lil Language Scholars? How did it get started?
Paula Fortini, a former grade school teacher with a Masters of Science in Education, started Lil Language Scholars in 2003. Lil Language Scholars was created for the purpose of bringing the many benefits of learning a foreign language at a young age to American children – enabling them to keep up with their peers in other countries.
Many Lil Language Scholars begin learning Spanish at age 3. By the time they reach middle school, these youngsters have become competent speakers and readers of Spanish and some are well on their way to learn a third language.
After teaching in the public schools for over 15 years, Paula recognized that the way we teach foreign language in America is decades behind other countries. With a belief that our children deserved a better chance to compete in the global world she opened Lil Language Scholars. The focus at the time was to enable preschool aged children to speak in a second language prior to starting kindergarten. While our mission remains the same, we have grown with our students and now offer opportunities up through eighth grade, including homeschoolers.
After quitting her teaching job back in 2003 to start the pilot Lil Language Scholars franchise, Paula set to out replace her full-time teaching salary while working fewer hours. Using networking and the many people around her in her daily life, Paula quickly contracted with five pre-schools, earning an income of $26,000 in her first year. Though this was lower than her teaching salary, it was part-time work and allowed her to be home a few days a week with her own preschooler. Two years later, Paula was able to replace her teaching salary AND be a full-time mother to her young four-year-old son. She was able to focus on her son and be an entrepreneur all at the same time!
Paula’s Lil Language Scholars pilot franchise has grown every year, with the exception of 2009, when revenue was the same as 2008 as the country worked its way through a recession. One key learning of Paula’s pilot franchise is that she learned that Lil Language Scholars is almost a recession-proof career. Parents will cut back expenses in some areas when money is tight, but not when it comes to educating their children.
Currently Lil Language Scholars has three contract workers that work with the children in its client schools. Paula still teaches at least one class at every age, so the new lessons and projects can be test marketed prior to including them in the standard curriculum.
Running her own Lil Language Scholars franchise continues to be a dream come true for Paula.
Owning her own business gave her the flexibility to be both a mother and a full-time professional entrepreneur all at the same time.
Realizing that other working mothers face the difficult balancing act of managing work and family, Paula decided to franchise Lil Language Scholars to allow others to benefit from what she has learned. You too can live the dream that Ms. Paula is living. You too can open a Lil Language Scholars franchise and make a living doing something you can be proud of.
